The 2023 Municipal General Election was held Tuesday, November 7, 2023.  Three seats on the New Florence Borough Council were being voted on.  The three positions expiring needed to be filled with write-in candidates’ names since no one ran during the 2023 General Primary Election held in May.  The positions held by Jim Moore, Gwen Dellett, and Ron Gyure expire at the end of December.  Below are the results of the election from the Westmoreland County website.  It shows there were 157 write-in votes.  Gweneth Dellett, James Moore, and Ronald Gyure received the greatest number of votes.  This does not mean they will stay on council.  Write-in winners have the option of turning down the positions.  At this time, it’s not known if the three top vote winners will take the positions.

Besides the election results, the New Florence Community Library would like to remind folks that winter is almost here.  In case of bad weather, please call the library to make sure they are open.  Thank you.

The borough of New Florence has made a change in it’s building permits process.  A different company is now doing the work for the borough.  Below is the updated section from the Zoning-Building Permits page.

Building permits are also handled at the municipal level. In Pennsylvania, municipalities have three options available to them for permit review and approval under Uniform Construction Code (UCC) legislation.

  • Review and issue permits by in-house municipal staff
  • Contract with building inspection company for review and issuance
  • Opt-out of the process entirely which leaves the job of building permit review and issuance to the PA Department of Labor and Industry

In the case of New Florence, building permits are handled by TKL Code Inspection Services in Indiana, PA.  Their contact information is listed below.  The primary point of contact for all building permits or any questions regarding building permits is Andrew Lichtenfels at 724-801-8204.  Please call and leave a message.  Your call will be returned as soon as possible.

Greetings all! The Laurel Valley Area Historical Society will hold its first annual “Annual Meeting” on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. at the Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home in New Florence. I realize that this is just two short weeks after the last meeting, but we are attempting to get on a regular schedule and our draft Constitution and Bylaws call for an annual meeting in April of each year. This will serve as an organizational meeting for the coming year (April 2023 through March 2024) as we hope to plan some interesting and fun activities for the Society. I sent out an ‘event invite’ for the last meeting and it confused a bunch of folks so I’m not going to do that this time — but please join us if you are able. Along with the Annual Meeting, we will also be opening up the Society to official memberships. We have a bit of a two-edged sword here as we are just getting the society organized and running so we don’t have much to offer yet for your membership dollar but without some early funding, we are not going to be able to develop an organization that will be enjoyable to be a member of! Right now, membership includes voting rights which is critical in defining the direction of the organization and planning the activities for the coming year. We are currently offering individual memberships for $20 per calendar year but they will be prorated for this first year as we only have 3/4 of a year left — so an individual membership for the remainder of this year will be $15. Family memberships are normally $40 per year (for a family of four — $10 per family member beyond 4) but will be $30 for this year and $7.50 for each additional family member beyond 4. Each family member must have the same physical address. Life memberships are also available — please contact me for details if you are interested. We will offer several levels of corporate membership/sponsorship at a later date. Membership applications will be available at the Annual Meeting and will be posted here also. For now, we will be collecting only cash or checks for dues. Hope to see you on Wednesday! Doug Hull PS:  You can send checks — along with name, address, email — to Laurel Valley Area Historical Society, box 97, new Florence, pa 15944. I will post an application in a few days that will have all the information — but if you want to send now, just follow the instructions here. If you have any questions, please contact Dick Stuart for more information.  Kathy Mack, the society’s President is taking time off to deal with a family matter.  Thank you. Richard C.
