NEWS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 17, 2022

School Bus Safety

Greensburg, PA – As the new school year approaches, the Pennsylvania State Police would like to remind motorists to be alert for school buses, pedestrians, and school bus stop locations. Troopers also remind drivers to allow extra travel time during morning and afternoon commutes.

Title 75, Section 3345, Meeting or Overtaking School Bus, requires that drivers approaching a stopped school bus with stop arm extended and red lights flashing shall stop at least 10 feet away from the school bus, whether approaching from behind or from the opposite direction. The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection at which a school bus is stopped shall stop his vehicle at that intersection until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated. Upon conviction, the penalties for a violation of this section include a $250.00 fine, a 60-day driver’s license suspension, and 5 points on the motorist’s driving record.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), “if physical barriers such as grassy medians, guide rails or concrete median barriers separate oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in the opposing lanes may proceed without stopping.”

Troopers also encourage parents and caregivers to discuss these safety tips with their children:

  • When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and line up at least five giant steps away from the curb or the roadway to wait for the bus.
  • Never run after the school bus if it has already left the bus stop.
  • Never push when getting on or off the school bus.
  • Always walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus when crossing so that the school bus driver can see you.
  • When the school bus is moving, always stay in your seat and never put your head, arms, or hands out of the window.
  • Never cross the street behind the school bus.
  • Never speak to strangers and never get into a car with a stranger.
  • If walking to school, wear bright-colored or reflective clothing and use crosswalks where available.

For more school safety tips, visit penndot.gov or nhtsa.gov.

11 May 2022

The following drug prescription drug drop off box information was added to the Residents Crime and Safety and St. Clair Township Department pages.

Every year there is a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  Did you know residents of the area have two easy ways to get rid of unused, expired, or unwanted prescription medication.  The first is through the St. Clair Township Police Department.  The department inherited a secure prescription drug drop off box from the now defunct New Florence Police Department.  That box is accessible to area residents in the St. Clair Township building in Seward at 550 Seward Street.  The box can be accessed when either the township secretary is working or if a township police officer is in the building.  Please call first to check if someone is in.  The secretary can be reached at 814-446-5211 and the police department at 814-446-4261.

A second option to get rid of unwanted prescription drugs is to use the drop off box that’s located in the Johnstown City Hall building at 401 Main Street in Johnstown.  The box is easily reached in the first-floor lobby of the building.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, please use the Market Street entrance.  The box is accessible Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm.  Also, there are several 30-minute free parking areas right in front of the entrance.  This makes it very easy to use this facility.

Please take advantage of these free services to get rid of your unused, expired, or unwanted prescription medications.  In the end this helps make everyone safer in our communities.

6 May 2022

License Your Dog in PA   All dogs three months or older must be licensed by Jan. 1 of each year. Violators can be cited with a maximum fine of $300 per violation plus court costs. An annual license is $8.50 and a lifetime license is $51.50. If the animal is spayed or neutered, the annual fee is $6.50 and lifetime is $31.50. Discounts are available to older adults and people with disabilities. The small license fee helps the millions of dogs in the state by funding the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement. Dog licenses are available from your local county treasurer and other licensing agents. Reasons for dog licensing:

  • It’s the law. All dogs three months and older must have a current license.
  • If your dog gets lost, a license is the best way to get him back. A license helps animal control and shelters identify your dog and get him back home safely.
  • The cost of a license is less than the penalty for being caught without one. Owners who fail to license their dogs could face a fine of up to $300 for each unlicensed dog.
  • License fees support animal control. The annual fee you pay to license your dog helps keep shelters running and supports the work of the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement, which is responsible for ensuring the welfare of dogs, regulating dangerous dogs and overseeing annual licensing and rabies vaccinations.
